Maundy Thursday Sculpture - 2007
The Last Supper as Sculpture - sharing images of Maundy Thursday with the entire NoDa community. |
Right by 36th Street. Inviting passers by to stop and meditate on the significance of this evening. |
So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and prepare the Passover meal for us that we may eat it." (Luke 22:8) |
Before the table was completely set, cars were slowing and stopping to take a look. |
13 places at the table. 12 torches lighted. Judas is still present, but a symbolic (and subtle) difference - he has no light in this sculpture. |
Several people walking along the sidewalk stopped, walked over to the table, and seemed to spend time thinking, meditating... praying perhaps? |
Later during dinner... the table is changed. Bread is eaten, passover herbs are gone. Wine has been drunk. |
One cup is different. This night changed the passover into the sacrament of Holy Communion. |
Not an attempt at humor. An attempt to connect the visual to the reality of what is being remembered. One plate and cup have been symbolically broken. Judas has left also... for a different destination. |
Jesus has left the building. He's headed to a garden. To an ancient olive press. Where he will pray. And be arrested. And begin a long, slow, painful death. One given for you and me. |
Worth Remembering. Also worth sharing with the community we wish to serve, many of whom will resonate with these images simply because they are accesible. |
The Last Supper, not hidden inside church walls, but shared with the entire community out in the open. |
